Maybe I'll be breast feeding for a bit longer...

Today was a really scary day. Jayden has gotten to the age where I decided I should slowly start trying to wean him. We tried formula- and it didn't work so I decided I would try to wean him to whole milk.

I researched online and talked to friends and decided I would give him a bottle with 75% breast milk and 25% whole milk. I had tried it with formula before and he wouldn't take it- so I was keeping my fingers crossed.
I went and bought some whole milk and the store- pumped some breast milk and waited for him to get hungry. Around 4 he started to get hungry. I mixed the milk and breast milk and offered it to him. He chugged it down and I was SO excited. Imagining my freedom as he drank away.
About 5 minutes after he finished the bottle and as I was carrying him downstairs he threw up a TON... I took another couple of steps. More vomit... He threw up five times. If you know Jayden you know he is so mellow. Throwing up didn't seem to phase him at all. And since he didn't seem like he was in pain- I wasn't TOO worried.
I took him upstairs to take a bath since he was soaked in throw up. I set him down in the tub and he started acting really strange. He kept falling over. It's like he didn't have any balance. He wouldn't cry he would just try to reach out to me and then fall.. and then try again. I was starting to get really worried. I picked him up and just as I did he started to wheeze. Within seconds his face was swelling up and hives were breaking out all over his face.
I yelled down to Ryan, "We have to go to the hospital, NOW!"
The rest is a blur. I put a diaper on him.. he seemed to be going in and out... I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off looking for my shoes, looking for the keys grabbing clothes for Jayden... looking for the Dr's phone number. All while carrying my little boy who seemed to be having a very hard time breathing.
I tried dialing his Dr;s number twice but I was shaking so hard it took me three times. Im surprised I had any coordination at all...

We need an instacare a lot closer to our house!!! It took us over 15 minutes to get there. By the time we did get to the right building - Jayden's eyes were swollen shut with goo coming out of them. He had thrown up on me. We must have looked pretty white trash as I had throw up all over my shirt and on the crotch of my pants. And Jayden was wearing the first thing I had grabbed out of the drawer... a shirt that was way to big for him and pajama bottoms that were covered in barf.

Luckily they took us in right away- lots of Benadryl and oxygen monitoring - he was doing much better.

Apparently Jayders is allergic to dairy. Fabulous.

We are going to set an appoint with an allergist and find out how bad it is. This outbreak he had was only after 2 oz of whole milk.

It was the scariest thing I have gone through and Im glad Ryan was home to be a calm driver :)

Jayden is acting a little loopy from the Benadryl. I pray this never happens again!!!

My brothers and I are all allergic to milk. In our childhood days, there weren't any good soy products, so we grew up with juice on our cereal. It's really not a bad life being allergic to dairy. Though my witch doctor fixed me so I can enjoy all the dairy I want these days. But my brothers both still as grown men eat their cereal with juice.

I'm so sorry - that is terrifying! I'm glad you got there in time, and glad Ryan was home to go with you!

Tiff, I can't even imagine how scary that would be. I definitely would have been freaking out. I am glad Jayden is okay :) Now that I know everything is okay, it's kind of funny to picture you waltzing into the instacare with barf on your crotch :)

Darn it! That is really rough. I'm glad that you were able to get him the help he needed quickly, though. The last time I took JJ to kids care I was there for FOUR hours!!! Good luck on figuring out the dairy thing!

Oh my gosh! So scary! That was probably the longest car ride ever!

We would have a hard time eliminating dairy at our house...no ice cream or cheese...what would we eat?!

Oh Tiff!!! How awful! You've gone through a lot with that little guy and he's not even 1 yet!!! It's amazing us mommies have any sanity left at all! I'm so glad that they figured out what was wrong and were able to help. No ice cream! Poor sweet Jayden...

hey, well i can be your own personal nutritionist :). i can't imagine how scary that must have been!!!! my stomach gets all in knots just when brooke gets a cut or something!! lol. anyway, there are so many products nowadays. soy or rice milk. i had to do a project in college where i had to live with a pretend food allergy for a month. i chose dairy bc it's actually one of the easier to deal with (just imagine if he was allergic to wheat!). rice milk was my favorite but soy milk has more protein and fat in it that jayden would need. soy dream vanilla tastes the best to me. they also have soy and rice milk ice cream, yogurt, etc. his allergy very likely might get better with age too. anyway the doc will give you so much info, good thing you have breastmilk, right?! good luck

Oh my goodness. I would have been hysterical!! Poor Jayden and Momma. Did you ever suspect this while you were nursing? WHen Lucy was having a hard time the Dr told me to not have dairy. Im so glad he is ok :)

What a tough guy he is. I'm glad all's well (except for that fact that now you'll have to watch everything he eats :( I hope it's a short-lived thing.)
