Guilty Mommy and Stupid Doctors

Jayden has been into EVERYTHING lately. Since he has been crawling... life has gotten a lot more interesting. And I find myself saying "No" "Dirty" "Owee" a lot more often.

His favorite toy since he has turned 8 months?

If he can see it he's off to get it. He has figured out how to take them off the doors. I finally figured out how to put them back on.

So I was in our master bathroom curling my hair getting ready to go to nanny. Jayden had been in the bedroom but crawled into the bathroom to play with the spring door stop. I finished curling my hair so I turned off and unplugged the curling iron. I needed to hairspray my hair- but I didn't want to intoxicate Jayden with the fumes... so I grabbed my bottle of hairspray and walked into the bedroom.

Two seconds later I heard this blood curdling scream. I run into the bathroom to see Jayden on the floor with my curling iron right next to him. Ugh... I hated myself. It fell on his hand. I ran his hand under cold water and tried my best to comfort him. He's such a good sport as he only cried for like two minutes but he had these HUGE blisters over his poor hand.

I called his Doctor to see if I needed to treat the burn with creams.. or if I should wrap it.. but I only got their voicemail. I left a message and called my mom and Emily who assured it was not a big deal and I seemed to be doing things just fine.

About a half hour later the nurse called me... I explained where the burn was, told her it was a second degree burn (From what I could tell), I told her he was doing just fine, and I asked her if there was anything I needed to do for it. She told me to hold on while she talked to the Doctor.

She came back on the line and told me I had to come into the office so they could examine the burn. I told her I actually had to work and asked her if I could just treat it at home. Nope, said "For Jayden's safety you really should come in" GUILT TRIP! I was so frustrated because not only was I losing money from NOT working that day but I would have to pay the stinking 25 dollar copay on TOP of whatever the office charges...

So I had to call Emily to cancel which I felt SO guilty about because she was moving in two days and really needed me there. :( So sorry Emily!

Get this- I get to the Doctors. I pay the 25 dollar copay. They weigh Jayden. Doctor walks in. Looks at his burn "Oh poor guy!! Don't pop his blisters. Don't put cream on these burns. He'll heal just fine." Then she told me a story about another baby who got burned. And told me to make sure he can't reach any cords." In and out in three minutes. WHAT THE HECK!!! She is going to bill my insurance 90 something dollars for that!?!?!?!?!

Anyway- every time I see Jayden's poor hand I feel so stinking guilty it is making me sick. Luckily it doesn't seem to be bothering him. But it sure is bothering me.

Ugh, I'm so sorry! At least for the price of your $25 copay, the loss of a day's wages and $90-something billed to your insurance, you have the peace of mind that the Dr. said he'll heal just fine.....a very expensive sentance, but hopefully a little calming.

Last year on the 4th of July JJ grabbed a sparkler and burned his hand too. He had blisters on the palm of his hand and on the insides of 2 fingers. I felt SOOOOO bad!!! All the other kids were laughing and playing and mine was crying because he had 2nd degree burns on his hand! I felt like the worst mom ever! I know they're fun, but I won't give my kids sparklers until they're a lot older!

Oh Tiff you have had a couple of rough weeks! I am sooo sorry! You are such an incredible mom though so don't let it get to you TOO much. It happens so much. Half of my nieces and nephews have burned their poor little hands somehow...so it happens a lot! Jayden is such a tough little guy he will heal just fine!

How sad!!! It's so hard to see them in pain... but no fear, this doesn't make you a bad mom. Just human, like the rest of us. :) I hate how any time I call the pediatrician's office to ask a question about something they tell me I should make an appointment to bring him in. They are totally in the business of CYA! (Cover their backs!)I've said no a few times and I'm glad I did. But in this case I think I would have done what you did. I hope this next week is much much better than the past couple!

Poor Jayden!! Don't feel like a bad mom, it could happen to anyone we are all human. That stinks that you had to go to the doctor and they only talked to you for 3 minutes, I would have probably gone in too!! I am sorry things have been crazy for you lately, hopefully it gets better soon.

All these poor babies with their burned hands! :( Don't be too hard on yourself, accidents happen. I would be mad about the stupid doctors though! How frustrating!

I freaking hate doctors. I swear they tell you to come in even when they know you don't need to just so they can make their $100 a minute. Poor Jayden though! I hope his hand heals quick! And don't feel guilty- seriously it's part a havin kids! Can we please get together soon? we miss you guys!

I know exactly how you feel!!! Poor sweet little baby! We have 2 copays from kidscare and 3 copays from the burn center plus whatever they are billing us plus the cost of bandages...it sucks that you have to think of $ when your baby gets hurt. Hallie's hands look SO good, it really is amazing how fast they heal...if you need any bandages or advice let me know. And you are a wonderful mom, if it's not one thing it's another--that's just what happens when they start exploring the world around them.

OKay I am behind on your blog. Jayden is crawling! How exciting, but yes scary at the same time! It is totally not your fault that happened. it could happen to anyone. Addelyn fell of the bed this week because I forget that she start to move everywhere now. Yes, stupid moment on my part! Also so sorry that you had to go in and miss work. I think that is crazy. I almost never take them to the doctor now because it always seems to be a waste!

Ohhh, We love Jayden Bug..he's so cute! Don't get to upset over it. One thing you'll learn as time goes on and you become a "more seasoned" mother is that no matter what the doctor is ALWAYS going to say "bring them in." I think they have to so they don't get sued or something. There truly is not much you can do for small burns. Kate got burned last year on the tail pipe of our motorcycle and had huge blisters. As long as you keep it cold for a bit the burning will eventually lessen. I've also been burned severely before and they didn't do much. It's just one of those things and I guess it was just one of those days.... we forgive you and we still love you!!! Alex was really sad you didn't come though; you two seem to have a special little bond!
